There are essentially three main types of kitchen cabinets. The differences lie in the way the cabinet doors and drawers sit in the carcass. Here is a quick overview of the three styles:

Partial overlay – With this type of construction, the door and drawer fronts partially cover the face frame, leaving part of the carcass exposed. Because they use less facing wood than the full overlay method, this construction method is often cheaper.

Full overlay – With this type of construction, the doors and drawer fronts completely cover the face frame. Full overlay costs slightly more than the partial overlay method, but this type of construction results in a much sleeker and more modern design. 

Inset – With an inset construction, the doors and drawer fronts are inset into the frame. Traditional Shaker kitchens are made using this type of construction. Because more craftsmanship is required, inset cabinets are typically the most expensive.
